ANHEUSER-BUSCH NEWARK BREWERY RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING RECYCLING PROGRAMAward Recognizes Brewery for Recycling Efforts NEWARK, N. J. (Oct. 26, 2004) - The Anheuser-Busch Newark brewery has been recognized as one of the state’s top recyclers by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Anheuser-Busch - one of only 10 honorees in the NJDEP 2004 recycling awards - received the Commissioner’s award for waste reduction. “Recycling is vital to conserving our natural resources,” said NJDEP Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell. “Anheuser-Busch has demonstrated innovative leadership to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfills and other facilities. With individuals and companies such as Anheuser-Busch working together, we can strengthen protection of our environment for New Jersey’s future generations.” The Anheuser-Busch Newark brewery implemented a comprehensive program resulting in 98 percent of waste materials being recycled annually. Last year the brewery recycled nearly 119,000 tons. Among other items, the brewery recycled 200 million pounds of spent grain, 7.5 million pounds of glass, 5 million pounds of cardboard and 1 million pounds of Beechwood chips. “At Anheuser-Busch, our environmental philosophy and policy is based on the belief that the world we all share is given to us in trust,” said Rich Guindon, manager, Environmental Health & Safety, Anheuser-Busch Newark brewery. “Every choice we make is made with the objective of minimizing our environmental impact, and we remain committed to this in the Newark community.” USEPA Partner of the Year On October 15, 2004, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. with a Partner of the Year award for building waste reduction into all of its activities, from brewing beer to entertaining people at SeaWorld and Busch Gardens theme parks. Overall, Anheuser-Busch Companies reduced waste by light-weighting packaging products, reducing the amount of aluminum used to produce its 24-ounce cans by 5.1 million pounds and saving 7.5 million pounds of paperboard by decreasing the thickness of its 12-pack bottle packaging. In addition, the company switched to durable polypropylene pallets for its finished products. These pallets can be reused and, eventually, recycled. Based in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. is the leading U.S. brewer and holds a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer. Budweiser is the world’s best-selling beer, and Bud Light is the world’s No. 1 light beer. In a survey of 10,000 business leaders and securities analysts, Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. ranked first overall in quality of products and services among nearly 600 companies researched in FORTUNE magazine’s 2004 “America’s Most Admired Companies” listing. The company also is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and is the world’s largest recycler of aluminum beverage containers.
