ANHEUSER-BUSCH FAIRFIELD BREWERY BUILDING TECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE RENEWABLE ENERGY IN 2008

Brewery, SunEdison Agree to Host 1.18 MW Solar Energy System on Brewery Property

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (July 30, 2008) – As part of the company’s ongoing effort to operate with care and concern for the environment, Anheuser-Busch will begin using alternative energy sources this year at its Fairfield, Calif., brewery.

The brewery will generate 15 percent of its fuel needs from a Bio-Energy Recovery System (BERS) that is currently under construction. BERS technology turns nutrients in brewing wastewater into renewable biogas that is used to decrease the use of natural gas.

In addition, the Fairfield brewery has entered into an agreement with SunEdison to host a solar power plant on the brewery’s property. The solar energy system will generate the equivalent of approximately 3 percent of the brewery’s electricity needs and also generate Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for businesses or individuals to purchase to offset their use of fossil fuel energy and greenhouse gas emissions. The 1.18 megawatt (DC) photovoltaic system will be constructed during the late summer. Both energy projects will be operational by the end of the year.

Anheuser-Busch also announced today that its Houston brewery will use biogas from a nearby landfill as part of an alternative fuel plan that when combined with the facility’s BERS, is anticipated to provide more than 70 percent of the brewery’s fuel needs. The projects in Houston and Fairfield will increase the use of renewable fuel at the company’s U.S. breweries to more than 15 percent by the end of 2009. This means more than five billion 12-oz. servings of beer – or about one in seven beers brewed by Anheuser-Busch in the United States – are expected to be brewed using renewable fuel by the end of 2009*, thanks to efforts at the company’s 12 U.S. breweries.

“The installation of BERS and hosting of a solar power plant are the latest examples of how we strive to conserve natural resources and minimize our impact on the environment,” said Kevin Finger, plant manager, Anheuser-Busch Fairfield brewery. “We are proud to serve as environmental stewards here in Fairfield and in all the communities where we have facilities.”

Anheuser-Busch is the world’s largest operator of BERS and first used the technology in 1985. The Fairfield brewery will be the tenth of Anheuser-Busch’s 12 U.S. breweries to implement the technology. BERS is also used at the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Wuhan, China.

“By substituting biogas for fossil fuels, the Fairfield brewery will reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases,” Finger said. “The use of BERS also reduces other air pollutants that would result from community wastewater treatment facilities and lowers the electricity demand on those facilities.”

Anheuser-Busch has received more than 40 awards for its Bio-Energy Recovery Systems. In 2006, almost 2 trillion BTUs were generated through the use of BERS, enough to provide heat to more than 25,000 homes.

“Over the past three decades, Anheuser-Busch has taken many steps to be more efficient with natural resources and energy. SunEdison is honored to support their latest efforts by generating clean, renewable solar power for 20 years,” said Thomas (Tom) Rainwater, CEO of SunEdison.

The ground mount solar system, sizeable at nearly 1.2 MW, will be built on Anheuser‑Busch property near California Highway 80. As part of the solar power services agreement, SunEdison will install, operate, monitor and maintain the solar system.

The installation of BERS and agreement with SunEdison are the latest in a series of conservation and efficiency improvements at the Anheuser-Busch Fairfield brewery. For example, the brewery currently recycles more than 99 percent of the solid waste it generates, continuing a tradition dating back to the late 1800s when Anheuser-Busch first recycled brewers’ grain into cattle feed. Materials recycled at the Fairfield brewery include recovered alcohol from the brewing process, scrap aluminum and metal, glass, cardboard, wood, brewing grain, beechwood chips, stretch wrap and labels, electronic equipment and batteries. This amounted to more than 588 million pounds of recycled materials in 2007 alone. For these efforts, the Fairfield brewery has been honored 14 times by the Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) from the California Integrated Waste Management Board.

The Fairfield brewery also reduced its greenhouse gas emissions in 2006 with a project to recover steam to heat water in the brewhouse. In addition, the brewery recently installed more efficient boiler burners, new energy-efficient air compressors and replaced the lighting at the brewery with timed, energy-efficient fixtures. The brewery is also evaluating the installation of a wind turbine on-site to generate power from a renewable source.

As a member of the U.S. EPA Climate Leaders Program, Anheuser-Busch has committed to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions to 5 percent below 2005 levels by the year 2010 for all of its U.S. operations. The company has also committed to increasing the total use of renewable fuel from 8 percent to 15 percent in the same time period company-wide.

Based in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 48.5 percent share of U.S. beer sales. The company brews the world’s largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser-Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer, and a 27 percent share in China brewer Tsingtao, whose namesake beer brand is the country’s best-selling premium beer. Anheuser-Busch ranked No. 1 among beverage companies in FORTUNE Magazine’s Most Admired U.S. and Global Companies lists in 2008. Anheuser-Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and one of the world’s largest recyclers of aluminum cans. *“Five billion 12-ounce servings” and “one in seven beers brewed by Anheuser-Busch” are equivalent figures derived from taking the company’s U.S. beer production in 2007, converting it to 12-ounce servings and multiplying the figure by the estimated percentage of renewable energy the company plans to use in 2009.
