BALDWINSVILLE (April 25, 2008) – In celebration of Earth Day, Anheuser-Busch is hosting a series of fun and educational “Green Week” events and activities for its employees at many of its facilities across the country. The theme of this year’s Green Week is “The Power of One” and emphasizes how each employee can have a positive impact on the environment by making small changes in their daily behavior. This is the 18th consecutive year Anheuser-Busch has sponsored employee events to protect the environment and raise awareness for energy conservation.
Many facilities have combined Green Week activities with the company’s annual “Bring Our Kids To Work Day” event to educate employees and their children and grandchildren about actions they can take to minimize their environmental footprint.
Locally, brewery employees and their children will participate in an Energy Conservation Fair on Friday. Various local utilities, vendors, and contractors will distribute energy saving tips, plant a tree in the Children’s Garden on Friday and learn about the importance of environmental stewardship. Another highlight of the day includes a birds of prey flight demonstration and a build a kite activity linked to an environmentally friendly theme. Also, to conserve energy and to promote fitness, several brewery employees regularly ride their bikes to work.
In addition, the Anheuser-Busch Baldwinsville brewery will receive the Air & Waste Management Association’s Waste Management Award for its outstanding recycling and waste reduction efforts during the organization’s 100th annual conference in June. The brewery receives the award for its total waste management and its water treatment plant will be recognized as one of the most technologically advanced plants in the private sector.
“Anheuser-Busch has been involved in conservation, education, research and preservation efforts for more than 100 years,” said Steve McCormick, plant manager, Anheuser-Busch Baldwinsville brewery. “Our Green Week initiative is an important opportunity to educate employees and their children about the company’s environmental stewardship programs and encourage them to get involved in similar efforts at work, at home and in the community.”
Anheuser-Busch employees across the country will start their Green Week activities on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, and continue the celebration through Sunday, April 27. The brewer is encouraging all its employees nationwide to use public transportation, carpool, bike or walk to work, recycle, plant trees, and participate in community clean-up and restoration events.
These Green Week activities are consistent with the company’s longstanding commitment to protecting and preserving the environment. As the country’s leading brewer, Anheuser-Busch recycles 97 percent of all the waste it generates, ranging from scrap steel to office paper. In addition, Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corp, the company’s recycling subsidiary, is one of the largest recyclers of aluminum cans, recycling more than 27 billion cans annually – more cans than the company’s breweries package.
Anheuser-Busch continuously explores emerging technologies to conserve our natural resources, improve efficiencies and reduce dependency on fossil and foreign fuels at its facilities. The use of Bio-Energy Recovery Systems (BERS) provides nearly 19 percent of Anheuser-Busch Baldwinsville brewery’s fuel needs. BERS technology converts brewery wastewater into a renewable fuel source at ten of Anheuser-Busch’s twelve U.S. breweries and two of its overseas breweries, including Wuhan, China.
The company is also investigating the use of a number of other renewable energy technologies, such as wind, solar and biomass, to help further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the use of landfill gas as a supplemental fuel source at several locations. Anheuser-Busch has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program, a voluntary program that encourages the use of landfill gas (that would otherwise be wasted) as a renewable energy source.
Anheuser-Busch has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 5 percent from its 2005 baseline by 2010. In addition, the company recently set a renewable energy goal of 15 percent by 2010 for its U.S. operations.
Based in St. Louis, Anheuser‑Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 48.5 percent share of U.S. beer sales. The company brews the world’s largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser‑Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer, and a 27 percent share in China brewer Tsingtao, whose namesake beer brand is the country’s best-selling premium beer. Anheuser-Busch ranked No. 1 among beverage companies in FORTUNE Magazine’s Most Admired U.S. and Global Companies lists in 2008. Anheuser‑Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and one of the world’s largest recyclers of aluminum cans.
